The Numbers of the Days of the Week and the Months

The seven days of the week grew out of the influence of the seven creative planets, and in almost every language the names of the days still echo their planets - Monday is 'Moon's day' (Montag, Lundi), Saturday is 'Saturn's day', and so on. Cheiro gives each day a number according to the planet that rules it:

• Sunday = 1 (the Sun)
• Monday = 2 (the Moon)
• Tuesday = 9 (Mars)
• Wednesday = 5 (Mercury)
• Thursday = 3 (Jupiter)
• Friday = 6 (Venus)
• Saturday = 8 (Saturn)

The nine single numbers correspond to the planets as follows: 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Uranus, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Neptune, 8 Saturn, 9 Mars. The Sun and the Moon are the only two with 'double numbers': the Sun is interrelated with Uranus, so it is written 1-4, and the Moon is interrelated with Neptune, so it is written 2-7. There is a natural sympathy between the 1-4 and the 2-7 people, so that those born on the 1st, 4th, 10th, 13th, 19th, 22nd, 28th and 31st get on well with those born on the 2nd, 7th, 11th, 16th, 20th, 25th and 29th - especially if either is born in the House of the Moon (about 20 June to 27 July) or the House of the Sun (about 21 July to 27 August).

The twelve months are governed by the twelve signs of the Zodiac, each sign being a 'period' ruled by a planet, positive or negative, and carrying that planet's number:

Aries - 21 March to 19 April - Mars positive - number 9 (the first sign)
Taurus - 20 April to 20 May - Venus positive - number 6
Gemini - 21 May to 20 June - Mercury positive - number 5
Cancer - 21 June to 20 July - Moon positive - number 2-7 (the House of the Moon)
Leo - 21 July to 20 August - Sun positive - number 1-4 (the House of the Sun)
Virgo - 21 August to 20 September - Mercury negative - number 5
Libra - 21 September to 20 October - Venus negative - number 6
Scorpio - 21 October to 20 November - Mars negative - number 9
Sagittarius - 21 November to 20 December - Jupiter positive - number 3
Capricorn - 21 December to 20 January - Saturn positive - number 8
Aquarius - 21 January to 19 February - Saturn negative - number 8
Pisces - 19 February to 20 March - Jupiter negative - number 3

The positive periods give the more physical and forceful qualities; the negative periods give the more mental qualities. The twelve signs are also grouped into four triangles: the Fire Triangle (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), the Earth Triangle (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), the Air Triangle (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) and the Water Triangle (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces).

Because the Sun passes only gradually from one sign to the next, Cheiro allows about seven days at the beginning and seven days at the end of each sign - the 'Cusp' of the sign. During the cusp the qualities of the period are not quite so strong, and they blend with the sign that is passing away or coming into action. (Cheiro adds these seven cusp days to each period, which is why his dates sometimes run a little past the 20th.)
