Introduction to Cheiro's Numerology
Cheiro's system of numbers is built on the ancient Chaldean tradition, the same knowledge that the Chaldeans, Hindus, Egyptians and Hebrews regarded as a sacred science. These early masters of the occult held that the numbers 1 to 9 are the foundation of every calculation we make, just as the seven notes are the basis of all music and the seven primary colours the basis of all colour. Beyond 9 every number is simply a repetition: 10 is 1 with a nought added, 11 reduces to 2, 12 to 3, and so on. Any number, however large, can be brought back to a single figure by what the ancients called 'natural addition' (adding the digits from left to right until one figure remains). Each of the nine single numbers was given to one of the ruling planets of our solar system.
Two numbers matter most for every person. The first is the Birth or Day number, taken from the day of the month on which you were born and reduced to a single figure. This is the most important and most certain of all, for it sets up a vibration, linked to its planet, that lasts the whole of life. The second is the Name number, worked out from the letters of the name you actually use, each letter being given a value by the ancient Chaldean (or Hebrew) alphabet and the total reduced to a single figure. When the most-used Christian name and surname are added together they give the 'key number' of the name. Cheiro's aim is to bring these two numbers into harmony with one another, and with the dates, places and people around us.
The Chaldean alphabet gives these values: A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=8, G=3, H=5, I=1, J=1, K=2, L=3, M=4, N=5, O=7, P=8, Q=1, R=2, S=3, T=4, U=6, V=6, W=6, X=5, Y=1, Z=7. It will be noticed that no letter is given the number 9. The ancient masters of occultism left 9 out on purpose, because in the highest sphere the number 9 stands for the nine-lettered name of God; for that reason no single letter was ever ascribed to it. A name may, of course, still add up to a total of 9, in which case it carries the meaning given to that number.
